[서울=뉴시스]심지혜 박은비 기자 = 범부처 혁신 R&D 프로젝트 'K-문샷'이 핵심 인사의 중도 하차로 출범 단계부터 예기치 못한 변수를 맞이했다. 12대 국가 미션 중 핵심인 'AI과학자' 분야를 이끌던 20대 스타 PD 이민형 아스테로모프 대표가 전격 사의를 표명한 것으로 확인됐다.

12일 과학기술정보통신부와 관련 업계에 따르면, K-문샷 'AI과학자' 미션의 총괄 책임자(PD)를 맡았던 이민형 아스테로모프 대표가 전날 과기정통부에 사퇴 의사를 전달했다. 현재 배경훈 부총리 겸 과기정통부 장관의 최종 재가를 기다리는 중이며, 공식적으로 밝힌 사퇴 사유는 '일신상의 이유'다.

올해 24세인 이 대표는 대형 국가 프로젝트를 이끌 '20대 젊은 스타 PD'로 과학기술계의 주목을 받았던 인물이다. 최근 420억원 규모의 시드 투자를 유치한 과학 AI 스타트업 아스테로모프의 수장이자 대통령직속 국가AI전략위원회 위원으로 역량을 인정받아 왔다. 하지만 위촉 직후 한 대학 교수가 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)를 통해 이 대표의 16세 서울대 의대 연구원 경력과 서울대 약학과·의과학과 학력, 연구 이력 등을 둘러싼 의혹을 제기하면서 온라인상에서 논란의 중심에 섰다.

이에 대해 이 대표 측은 제기된 의혹들이 실제 사실과 다르다는 입장을 밝히고, 법적 조치를 검토하며 적극적으로 대응해왔다. 하지만 관련 논란과 공방에 따른 심적 부담이 커지면서 결국 자진 사퇴를 결단한 것으로 보인다.

과기정통부는 이 대표의 사표가 수리되면, 당장 후임자를 새로 공모해 선발하기보다는 국가과학AI연구센터(NAIS) 센터장이 해당 미션의 PD 역할을 겸임하는 대행 체제를 가동한다는 방침이다. 급작스러운 수장 공석에 따른 공백을 최소화하겠다는 취지다.

하지만 AI과학자 미션은 출범 초기부터 일정 부분 일정 조정이 불가피할 전망이다.

K-문샷은 과학기술 분야에 AI를 전격 도입해 오는 2030년까지 연구 생산성을 2배로 높이고, 2035년까지 국가 경쟁력 대도약에 필요한 12대 국가 미션을 해결하는 프로젝트다.

최근 국가과학기술연구회(NST)와 정보통신기획평가원(IITP)의 공모를 거쳐 지난달 21일 12명의 PD 선발을 마쳤다. 부총리 겸 과기정통부 장관이 직접 단장을 맡는 K-문샷 추진단이 총괄 추진체계 역할을 하며 관계 부처와의 정책 공조와 R&D 협력 등을 지원한다．
